What’s playing in Amy’s ear?

A friend of mine was recently looking for workout song suggestions, and I realized I haven’t done a post like this in over a year!  I’ve added a lot of new songs to my playlist since then.

Here’s what I’m listening to on my runs these days.  If I seem to have a weird and disparate collection of songs…well, I do.

What’s playing in Amy’s ear?

New playlist on the MP3!   Some of the songs are from my older playlists, some are recently added, but all helped me power through a 3-mile mostly run / little walk at the Y this morning.  After ten days away from the gym – cold weather zapped my motivation – I felt pretty good about this morning’s workout!

***********

Dynamite
Taio Cruz
This is one of those songs I’ve heard on the radio countless times, but I never knew the title or artist.  My sis-in-law, Carey, mentioned it on Facebook the other day; curious, I went to check it out and thought, “So THAT’s what that song is called!”  Excellent choice for getting you up and going.

Bad Romance
Lady Gaga

Get the Party Started
Pink

Single Ladies
Beyonce

I Do Not Hook Up
Kelly Clarkson

Waking Up in Vegas
Katy Perry

Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It
Will Smith
Nah-nah-nah-nah-nu-nah-nah, Big Willie Style.

Bulletproof
La Roux

U & Ur Hand
Pink
“I’m not here for your entertainment.  You don’t really want to mess with me tonight.”  Empowering lyric.

Telephone
Lady Gaga & Beyonce

I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
The Proclaimers
This song was HUGE in the summer of 1992.  The reason I remember the specific year?  It was my first year as a lifeguard at the Towanda City Pool, and we blasted the radio non-stop that summer.  A shout-out to Shana, Casey, Jacque, Sara, Angela – my fellow lifeguards that summer.  We did a lot of whistle twirling together.

Footloose
Kenny Loggins
Shut up, it’s a peppy song.

If We Ever Meet Again
Timbaland & Katy Perry

It’s the End of the World as We Know It
R.E.M.
Mumble-mumble-mumble-mumble, LEONARD BERNSTEIN!

Love Shack
B-52’s

Believe
Cher

Just a Girl
No Doubt
I ♥ Gwen Stefani’s abs.  This song put her (and No Doubt) on the map.

Livin’ La Vida Loca
Ricky Martin
Does anyone else remember seeing Ricky Martin perform this song at the Grammy’s for the first time?  I remember thinking, “Who is this guy?  He’s going to be a huge hit!”   This song still makes me want to swivel my hips.

Amy’s list of fave Christmas songs

I’ll admit it: I’m one of those people who start listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving.  (Somewhere, my husband is rolling his eyes.  He believes that Christmas songs and Christmas decorations should not be unleashed upon the world until December 1st.  And even that is really too early in his mind.)

I love all the standards, both old & classic and new & redone.  But I’ve got a few that I turn up and wail along with every time they come on B98.  Here’s my list of songs that make Christmas -er – Christmasy for me.

(Tip: Click the song title to give a listen.)

Merry Christmas Darling
The Carpenters
Forget Barb Streis; it’s Karen Carpenter’s voice that’s like buttah.  There’s something about her alto that conveys a sense of the holidays for me.  Every time I hear this song, I want to curl up next to a roaring fire, with a good book, a cup of hot chocolate, a pair of comfy pants and some really thick socks.  The Glee cast recently redid this song, and it’s enjoyable, but I’ll take the original anytime.

All I Want For Christmas Is You
Mariah Carey
I’m not generally a big fan of Skanky Carey, but I can’t help it with this one.  It’s so. much. fun.

Mele Kalikimaka
Bing Crosby
It’s not really so much the song I love here, as it is the image in my head of watching Christmas Vacation with my dad one hundred times over the past however many years.  No matter how many times he’s seen it, there are certain parts that still make my father laugh.  And that makes me laugh, because Dad sounds just like Clark Griswold when he laughs.  Mele kalikimaka, indeed.

O Holy Night
Celine Dion
Not so much a fan of Celine, either, and I especially hate the way she tends to pound on herself when she sings.  (Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Watch her perform sometime.  She beats on her chest more than Tarzan when he meets Jane.)  However, her version of O Holy Night is chill-inducing.  Her voice was created for music like this.  Jewel also has a version that I love.

The Christmas Song
The Chipmunks
I had the Chipmunks Christmas album as a kid.  Alissa recently discovered this song and was entranced by it.  How could you go wrong with singing Chipmunks?

Chanukah Song
Adam Sandler
A nod to my Jewish friends with this little ditty from Adam Sandler.  After all this time, I still find the line “OJ Simpson – NOT a Jew” hilarious.  Have a happy, happy, happy, happy Hanukkah.

A Baby Changes Everything
Faith Hill
This is a new favorite for me.  I would give my right pinky to have a quarter of the vocal talent Faith Hill has.   The lyrics are a reminder of why we have all the other songs in the first place.

What about you?  What are your favorite Christmas songs?

New workout music in the MP3!   This week’s playlist is all 80’s.  I don’t apologize for the cheese factor of some of these song choices.   They take me back to my youth.  🙂  If you hear someone singing on the track at the North Y, sorry, that’s probably just me.  I can’t help it.  I have to sing to some of these.
